The figures show that heīs the
most profitable forward of the League. But he takes the situation quite
naturally: Itīs my job. I came to score goals. Owen says to be happy in
Real Madrid: I didnīt expect to come and play, I knew I would have to fight
for it. The English player rejected the idea of the team focusing only on
the Rome game: In the League we cannot let any more point escape. And
about his future he was conclusive: I must win the respect on the pitch,
without complains. Heīs a complete gentleman.
-What can you tell us about
the last dinner with your player fellows?
-There wasnīt a particular reason for the dinner. I guess that happens
occasionally and since we didnīt have a game we could have a drink. Those
who have just joined the team had to say something in front of the others,
so it was Samuelīs, Woodgateīs and my turn to talk.
-What did you say?
-The problem was that they told us about it the same day of the dinner. I
had no idea, as I told Woodgate, and he didnīt know about it neither. What
happens is that he speaks Spanish fluently, he just stood up and improvised.
I had to write everything down. I had many things to say, but since I had to
read, it wasnīt very fluent and I admit that I was a bit nervous. I thanked
everybody for the welcome and I confess I said some sweardwords in Spanish
(smiles).
-Do you know you are the more
efficient forward of the Spanish League?
-I donīt know if Iīm the most efficient, though I read an article in the
English press that said that Iīm so regarding the scored goals per minutes
played. Itīs my job. I came to score goals, but the statistics can twist .
The truth is that Iīm very happy with my performance in Real Madrid.
-Curiously, Beckhamīs recovery
has meant your back to the bench, what do you have to comment?
-This question should be asked to the coach . When Iīm asked to play, I go
out to the pitch and I do it very happy, willing to score. Logically, when I
donīt play I feel a bit disappointed but the reasons of it should be given
by the coach.
-You have been given all the
opportunities you deserved to prove you can be a regular first-team player,
havenīt you?
-Itīs difficult to know. Iīm playing well and Iīm scoring goals but the
decision of playing or not is the coachīs. Itīd be very unfair, being the
new one, to say who must play. Itīs not correct to come and complain. Itīs
not a way of getting your fellow playersī respect. I have to talk on the
pitch so that the coach counts on me. I donīt want to cause problems to
anybody nor Club, I only want to play well.
-Do you feel at ease, with
another state of mind since the last Press conference you offered?
-I canīt ask for more from the personal point of view. When you join a club,
things are hard. I already said that it would be difficult to come in the
team because they are the best forwards of the world. I knew I would have to
work a lot. I didnīt expect to arrive and play, I knew I would have to
fight. But I was always confident and I know that if I had the opportunity I
would take advantage of it. In the football part, Iīm happy because I have
scored goals and things are going well.
-Do you think you will be
regular first-team player in Villarreal?
-I donīt know. I donīt know who is going to play, because the team is fine.
Zidane seems to be recovered, there are sanctioned players
Iīm ready to
play if I have to do it. Itīs an important game for us because we are seven
points away from Barcelona and we must win to reduce the gap.
-Can this game serve to claim
a place in the team looking about the Roma?
-I see the game against Villarreal as an opportunity to play well and score,
but thatīs the way I see all the games. It depends on the coach. I will try,
if I play, to give the best of me, though I admit that it would be great and
nice to play in Rome. If I do it well, I will have more options to be in the
Olympic.
-Can it be possible that the
team is more focused in the Romeīs game and they are forgetting a bit about
the date of El Madrigal? Have you ever played behind closed doors?
-I think I have never placed on an empty stadium, but Iīm not sure who will
benefit from that situation because when you play out you always want to
silence the rivals. I donīt know what will be best. If we would be 10 points
ahead, then it could say that we would play with the mind on the Rome, but
since we are seven points behind, we cannot say that. The game of Rome itīs
going to be a bit more important, because thereīs not margin of error, we
cannot let more points escape.
- Do you know what is to score in the Olympic with Liverpool.
-I have played two consecutive seasons against them and I have scored two
goals there. I remember I had played several games without seeing the net, I
was having a bad patch and these goals were a turning point. I won the
Golden Ball and I remember that game fondly.
-The other day we saw a
picture where we could see a lump in one of your legs, what have the doctors
told you?
-The problem is that in Spain the training shorts are shorter than those in
England and thatīs why nobody had seen it; I think I got it during a game
against Leicester City, when I receive a tackle. That caused a hole in the
muscle. When Iīm sitting itīs not perceptible and it only comes out when I
stand up. I reckon itīs a problem of liquid, but the doctors told me not to
worry about it.
-Who do you think deserves the
Golden Ball?
-I think the winner will be between Henry and Ronaldinho.
-How is your Spanish going?
-I had a lesson today morning but I didnīt wake up and I was half an hour
late. The teacher called me, and though I excused myself, I got a lot of
homework to do (smiles).
